Cascais, Portugal

Cascais Portugal

When considering a vacation many people overlook the option of Portugal.  With its charming cobbled streets, scattered beaches and the Sintra mountains to the north its the perfect peaceful getaway.  The flight is only 6 hours which isn't much compared to the time it takes to get to many other beaches in the Carribean. Portugal remained neutral in World War II and considering the town's elegance and royal past, Cascais has home to many of the exiled royal families of Europe.

Where To Stay
Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel & Spa

This is the five star hotel in the area.  Complete with a spa, pool, and restaurant.  The Restaurant La Terrazza Restaurant & Bar is run by Chef Paulo Pinto and features signature Portuguese meats and an assortment of Risottos.

Albatroz Palace
Located directly off the beach in the center of town this hotel is truly a gem.  Enjoy a delicious meal on the terrace overlooking the ocean and then down to the beach for some sun or cliff jumping.

Where to Eat
Furnas Do Guincho

This is one of the most relaxing and beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of dinning at.  The service is amazing and the food is fresh and flavorful.  Since the restaurant is directly on the Atlantic ocean they have all the best food of the Mediterranean.

Praia do Guincho

Is a popular beach located just 3 miles from Cascais.  Its a popular place for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.  There are also several surf camps and surf schools in the area that provide lessons.  This beach was also featured in the James Bond Film, On Her Majesties Secret Service.

Castle of the Moors

Moors Castle stands on top of the town of Sintra which is a breath taking drive from Cascais.  It is a 9th or 10th century castle that was taken by King Afonso Henriques after he conquered Lisbon and the moors surrendered.  Surrounded by paths and passageways it is a fun place to explore.

After visiting the castle is nice to explore the town of Sintra which has various cafes and shopping along quaint cobble stone streets.

Golfing

The area is compromised of over 10 golf courses.  One of the most popular ones is Quinta da Marinha which requires an wide range of skill.  Quinta da Beloura is another attractive golf course that is situated between the sintra mountain range and Cascais.  It boasts attractive views to sea and land. For beginners and less experienced golfers

Golf Academy Estoril is always a good choice and is located at the base of the Sintra mountains.
