Georgetown (Washington, D.C.)

Georgetown

One of my favorite places to visit in the Fall is Georgetown right on the outskirts of Washington DC.  There is tons of shopping, historic sites, restaurants and feels like your in London!

Where to Go

Washington D.C. is 5 minutes away from Georgetown where you can take tours of the white house or simply view all of the national monuments.  At night this city is lit up in the most magnificent way.  The John F. Kennedy Center is also the home of an array of preforming arts including; The Washington National Opera and The Washington Ballet.  There is also a rapid metro-rail and bus system in the area so it is very convenient to get around!

If you are visiting Georgetown around Christmas time there are many different extraordinary productions of the Nutcracker and will put you right in the mood for the Holidays!

Other Places to View

The Exorcist Steps

A Few different movies have been filmed in the city including the 1973 horror film The Exorcist.  In one of the most thrilling scenes the main character of the movie is pushed down this exact staircase which is said to be haunted.

Where to Eat

Clyde's

One of the town favorites is Clyde's which was opened in 1963.  Its an all American place that is famous for burgers but also try one of Maryland's signature crab cakes.  There are so many other delicious options that you will want to come back for Brunch

Where to Stay

The Graham Georgetown

Modern with an vintage-french twist The Graham is one of the finest places to stay in Georgetown.  It is located right off the popular shopping street (M- Street) and has an awesome rooftop with views of downtown and Washington D.C.  Its rooms are also a lot more affordable than other options in the area.

Cascais, Portugal

Cascais Portugal

When considering a vacation many people overlook the option of Portugal.  With its charming cobbled streets, scattered beaches and the Sintra mountains to the north its the perfect peaceful getaway.  The flight is only 6 hours which isn't much compared to the time it takes to get to many other beaches in the Carribean. Portugal remained neutral in World War II and considering the town's elegance and royal past, Cascais has home to many of the exiled royal families of Europe.

Where To Stay
Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel & Spa

This is the five star hotel in the area.  Complete with a spa, pool, and restaurant.  The Restaurant La Terrazza Restaurant & Bar is run by Chef Paulo Pinto and features signature Portuguese meats and an assortment of Risottos.

Albatroz Palace
Located directly off the beach in the center of town this hotel is truly a gem.  Enjoy a delicious meal on the terrace overlooking the ocean and then down to the beach for some sun or cliff jumping.

Where to Eat
Furnas Do Guincho

This is one of the most relaxing and beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of dinning at.  The service is amazing and the food is fresh and flavorful.  Since the restaurant is directly on the Atlantic ocean they have all the best food of the Mediterranean.

Praia do Guincho

Is a popular beach located just 3 miles from Cascais.  Its a popular place for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.  There are also several surf camps and surf schools in the area that provide lessons.  This beach was also featured in the James Bond Film, On Her Majesties Secret Service.

Castle of the Moors

Moors Castle stands on top of the town of Sintra which is a breath taking drive from Cascais.  It is a 9th or 10th century castle that was taken by King Afonso Henriques after he conquered Lisbon and the moors surrendered.  Surrounded by paths and passageways it is a fun place to explore.

After visiting the castle is nice to explore the town of Sintra which has various cafes and shopping along quaint cobble stone streets.

Golfing

The area is compromised of over 10 golf courses.  One of the most popular ones is Quinta da Marinha which requires an wide range of skill.  Quinta da Beloura is another attractive golf course that is situated between the sintra mountain range and Cascais.  It boasts attractive views to sea and land. For beginners and less experienced golfers

Golf Academy Estoril is always a good choice and is located at the base of the Sintra mountains.

Paris

Paris

Paris is the most beautiful city in the world.  There are so many things that will make you fall in love.  Architecture, shopping, food, history and art all come together in the most romantic way.  It has the second highest number of Michelin restaurants in the world next to Tokyo.  Be sure to check out the Effiel Tower, The Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe.

Palace of Versailles

If you can manage to venture a little bit out of the city The Palace of Versailles is place not to be missed.  The first mention of the Chateau was in 1038 and later became the home of King Louis XIV when he decided to move his home from The Louvre.  Points of interest include; The Hall of Mirrors,  The Chapel of Versailles, The Grand Apartment (The living quarters of King Louis XIV), The Opera and The Garden.   The Garden consists of 250 acres which is laid out in a geometric fashion.

Where to Stay

The perfect Parisian decor and feel located close to the major shopping street "Rue Saint-Honore".  It was also the place where the famous Woody Allen Film "Midnight in Paris" was filmed.

Where to Eat
Hotel Costes- http://hotelcostes.com
Costes is both a hotel and a chic restaurant.  It is a place to see and be seen.  Make sure to have a reservation as this is not a "walk in" type of place.  It has all the typical French quinine and drink.  Make sure to visit the Costes perfumery on your way out for scents that can only be bought in Paris.

Where to Shop

Rue Saint-Honoré
Is home to a number of French designer shops including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Givenchy and Christian Louboutin.  Since these fashion houses are based in Paris it is easy to find items that are not sold anywhere else in the world!

Notre Dame Cathedral
This Cathedral which was built in 1160 towers over the city of Paris and is considered the best exhibit of Gothic Architecture.  It has been the place of many significant events in history and has some of the most exquisite sculptures and stained glass.  It is also referred to in the popular story The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo.

"Love Lock Bridge"

A place to observe and take photos.  Many tourists flock to this famous bridge where they enjoy the ritual of putting a pad lock on the bridge to represent everlasting love.  Recently part of the bridges railings collapsed due to all of the weight so it might be best just to observe and take pictures.  Love padlocks can be seen at the Pont des ArtsPasserelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor and the Pont de l'Archevêché bridges in Paris.

Lake Winnipesaukee

Lake Winnipesaukee

The oldest summer resort in America

Fresh water and breathtaking views of mountains qualifys for the perfect Northern Vacation.  Lake Winnipesaukee is the oldest summer resort in America and people have been flocking here since the early 1900's.  The lake itself is massive and covers 69 square miles.  There are over 10 islands within the lake to explore and drive by while you are taking a voyage on a sail or speed boat.  Summer days on the lake have highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's.  This place is not to be missed.

What to do

Weather you like to bike, hike, boat, sail, jet ski or just enjoy the sun the lake has all your need.  Its not exactly a place to visit for the food but you cant beat buying some fresh lobster to cook at home.

Castle in the Clouds

The Castle was built in 1913 by Thomas Plant who became a millionaire through the shoe making business.  It is a pretty eclectic place to visit with tons to do.  There is a restaurant on the property which is open for lunch and dinner as well as an art gallery, horseback riding and a museum.

Where to stay

Although it is best to rent a property on the lake because its more of a vacation rental type of place you could also choose to stay at the Wolfeboro inn which is directly in town and on the lake.  It is truly an old style place with an updated feel and a great restaurant attached to it!

Take a Ride

On the Mount Washington

The Mount Washington is a must while on the lake if not renting a boat.  It will take you all around the lake while giving history and pointing out important landmarks and history.

Weirs Drive In

One of the last drive in movie theaters from the 19th century!  Its a popular summer beach attraction with all of the same movies you would find in the movie theater. A movie under the stars is waiting for you!....
